Though these images are sourced directly from black metal ephemeral materials, they are not a documentation of black metal but rather an investigation of the underlying qualities that initially inspired the use of blizzard-worn figures or stave churches as a visual means to communicate black metal. The reproduced images undergo new syntactical processes through Willing’s re-cropping and re-printing and visual noise or texture is introduced and amplified by digital and analogue feedback, echoing the lo-fi production techniques used within black metal. As the images move further away from their indexical source, they tease out concepts related to origins, making an affinity to the integral mythic speech taking place through the ever-changing retelling of black metal’s history.

Referential images such as these two are integral to the series, yet the majority of Svart Metall presents Willing’s unique photographs. As the opening image for Svart Metall, ‘Untitled (Moon)’ sets the timbre for the entire publication.
